What type of yarn are you producing?
FilSpec is a yarn spinner for the textile industry producing yarn on the cotton system. The raw material we use are generally synthetic or natural short fibers. The normal fiber length is between 30mm (1.25 in) to 60mm (2.25 in).

We also have the ability to add spandex in the core to create an elastic yarn or we can add a glass filament to increase the strength.

FilSpec does not produce or sell filament.

Who are your customers?
Our customers are knitters and weavers, manufacturers of narrow fabrics and cords, twisters, dyers, as well as thread manufacturers. Our minimum production and shipping lots are usually larger than 2000 lbs. FilSpec does not sell retail to individuals.

What is the difference between yarn and filament?
Basically, a textile yarn is made from short fibers (like cotton, polyester, rayon, etc…) spun together into a continuous yarn. A filament on the other hand is a continuous yarn produced directly by extruding synthetic filament from liquid polymer.

If needed, the producer can cut the filament in short fibers. This allows the blending with other short fibers in various mixes or to permit the spinning of these short fibers in yarn form with slightly different properties than the filament.

Spun yarn and filament have different properties due to the way they have been produced. The choice between the use of a spun yarn or a filament depends of the knitter or weaver's choice and the properties he is looking for in his product. (Hand, resistance, look, etc…)

Do you offer sewing thread?
FilSpec does not have the proper equipment to offer spun yarn on the specific small yarn bobbin. Our yarn is put on cardboard cones, which weigh between 4.5 lbs. (2 kgs.) to 13 lbs. (6 kgs.) depending on the yarn composition. The cone diameter is between 5 inches (12 cm) up to 10 inches (25 cm). However, we do sell yarn to thread manufacturers.

What is the lead-time?
The lead-time depends on various factors. If the product you are looking for is in stock and available, we can ship immediately. If the product is not in stock but we are already in production, delivery could be within a few days only. However, generally, the complete cycle of production is about three weeks for single yarn and four weeks for plied yarn.

Where do you deliver?
We can deliver goods anywhere in the world, either "delivered" or "Ex Works". We are shipping every week to Canada and USA. We are also shipping regularly to Europe and other continents.

What is the difference between a single yarn and a plied yarn ?
A plied yarn is made of two or more single yarns plied together. It requires an additional process. Plied yarn is stronger and obviously coarser than single. You can also ply different types of yarn together to obtain a different look or specific properties.

What is the difference between regular and reverse twist ?
In ring spinning, yarn is produced by applying a twist on the fiber roving. Regular twist yarn looks like a barbershop pole. If you look at the yarn closely, you will see that the fibers are all slanted towards the right. This is called "Z" twist because the direction of the fibers reminds us of that letter. In certain applications, a customer may require a reverse twist. The direction of the twist is then reversed at spinning. This is called reverse twist or "S" twist. On the air jet system, the yarn has practically no twist whatsoever.
